Sanjay Hiraskar's
Photography

Sanjay Hiraskar’s journey into the wild began with a single, transformative moment—standing before a photograph of a flying kingfisher that revealed a world the naked eye could not hold. That vivid encounter awakened in him a desire to explore nature more deeply and to share its hidden beauty with the world through the lens of a camera. A firm believer that true photography cannot be taught in classrooms, Sanjay approaches his craft with the eye of a painter and the patience of a naturalist. For him, mastering the mechanics of the camera is only the beginning; the true art lies in conveying emotion, story, and meaning within a single frame—an achievement that demands years of practice, persistence, and an intimate connection with the subject. His extensive travels—over forty countries mapped solely in pursuit of wildlife—have shaped both his artistic voice and his inner self. The forests have taught him silence, resilience, and acceptance, transforming him into someone who feels more at home in natural wilderness than in the “concrete jungles” of urban life. Today, Sanjay openly admits his deep and joyful addiction to the wild. His images are an invitation to readers to fall in love with nature, perhaps even to join him in becoming a “crazy wildlife lover.” With this photobook, he offers his journey for your appreciation, one frame at a time. His autobiography, titled Silver Needle has received a huge applause in the reading circle. He has received the Setu Award of Excellence in 2025.

EYES OF THE WILD

Wild Africa

Africa often brings to mind images of poverty, tribal life, malnutrition, and child deaths due to epidemics. Yet, the continent is blessed with extraordinary natural beauty. Its numerous national parks and forest reserves attract tourists from across the world. Among these, the Maasai Mara Game Reserve is regarded as one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. Covering nearly 200 square miles of open plains, woodlands, and riverine forests—and contiguous with the Serengeti—the Mara hosts a breathtaking diversity of wildlife. It is located just five-hours drive from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
The landscape is not densely forested, allowing visitors to easily observe wildlife in their natural habitat. The vast grasslands are dotted with herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle, and topi. Elephants and buffaloes wallow in the wide Musiara Swamp. The Mara and Talek rivers are filled with hippos and crocodiles. Leopards rest on isolated trees and can often be spotted from a distance. In the soft, warm light of early morning, a variety of animals emerge to bask in the sunshine. Watching large prides of lions roaming freely is truly thrilling. Read more
